Town Clerk

The Town Clerk's office is open to assist you during Town Hall hours of Monday through Thursday from 9am - 4pm. The following services are provided:

Marriage licenses can be obtained if both parties are present and have an original or certified copy of both birth certificates and a valid driver's license or non-driver ID. If either party has been divorced or widowed, you will need to provide the appropriate stamped paperwork. There is a $40 fee at the time of application and it must be purchased no less than 24 hours before the marriage and is good for up to 60 days.

One Day Marriage Officiant: New York State now allows anyone who is at least 1s years of age to perform a marriage in NY. They do not need to be a resident of New York State. We provide a license to the person who will be the “officiant” that is valid only for the day of the ceremony, and only for the couple which they are applying for.  The following rules must be followed:

The officiant has to complete an application at the location where the marriage license was applied for. So, if the marriage license was not purchased in the town of Somerset, we do not have the authority to issue a license to the officiant. This must be done at least 30 days in advance, and does not have to be applied for in person. You can apply via mail or online.  The application may only be submitted after the parties-to-be-married have obtained their marriage license.  The fee for this license is $25.00, and we can accept any form of payment.  A copy of the Responsibilities of the Officiant will be supplied to the applicant.  Seven (7) days before the ceremony, the application will be approved or disapproved.

Dog licenses are obtained at the Town Clerk's office and are required to be renewed annually. New York State law requires that all dogs 4 months of age be licensed and proof of current rabies vaccination is required.  Unaltered dogs cost $16 and spayed/neutered dogs cost $6 (please provide certificate of spay/neuter).  Any dog not licensed within 60 days of renewal date will be charged a late fee of $10.

Accessible Parking Tags are available and can be used in any vehicle that the applicant rides in. To obtain a tag the applicant must present a physician signed application. The applications are also available at the town clerk's office.

Vital Records (certified copies of birth, death and marriage records) that are filed in the Town of Somerset may be issued to persons listed within the New York State guidelines.  Marriage certificate copies may be issued to the persons listed on the certificate, lawful representative or a NYS Court Order. Death certificate copies may be issued to the spouse named on the certificate, parent, child, or sibling of the deceased person, lawful representative or NYS Court Order. Birth certificate copies may be issued to the person on the certificate or the parent of the person on the certificate, lawful representative or NYS Court Order. You must present proper identification when requesting the information and the certified copies are $10 each.

Conservation Licenses may be purchased at the Town Clerk's office. To purchase a hunting license you must have completed the proper hunter safety course and present your certificate. Fishing licenses do not require a training course and expire one year from date of purchase or renewal.  16 years of age and older are required to have a fishing license.
